Moon Walks: Quality Family Time
My family needed something extra special, something out of the ordinary. I think we all need that right now. With all that’s going on and all of the uncertainty with this pandemic, I wanted to create good forever memories for my girls. Something they could remember back on, from a time that was scary and uncertain, to be amazing and enlightening and extraordinary.
I started racking my brain what we could do . A typical summer activity wasn’t what I was after... I wanted EXTRAORDINARY . I’d been contemplating for weeks and nothing was coming to me. Then one night we were having a backyard fire. We have fires regularly and we play campfire games and talk for hours (no electronics are allowed).
But this particular night, Jossy (my youngest who is 13) said, “Why is it so easy to have deep conversations at night?” She pointed out that all the times she’s ever had sleepovers, her and her friends always talk about ‘big stuff’, but that during the day it’s always ‘regular stuff’. So we all started talking about that and our theories on why that is. We also all agreed that although nighttime brings out deep convos, it’s the night sky that really pulls the philosophers out of us. You can’t gaze at the starry sky without really feeling something. It fills you with wonder and reminds you there’s a universe beyond your own little boxed-in world. This conversation sitting around the fire was my AHA moment. This idea would truly transform my family...
MOON WALKS
Every night as soon as it’s dark (like all the way dark), we set out for our family moon walk around our neighborhood. It has been absolutely incredible! We all look forward to it so much. There is something truly magical about the night sky. We talk about anything and everything. We laugh, we bond, we create memories... by the light of the moon and stars. It is truly beautiful.
If you’re looking for something extra special for your family, I encourage you to start your own moon walks. Moon walks are free, you don’t have to worry about running into other people, they are amazing for family or marriage bonding, and the fresh night air and physical activity are great for stress relief and overall wellness.
If you have really young children, it might still be worth prolonging bedtime. The benefits may outweigh the bedtime glitch. The summer nights run late right now but as we move closer to fall, the sunset will be a lot earlier and it shouldn’t interfere with bedtime at all!
Our nightly family moon walks have been a godsend for our family. I know my girls will remember these moon walks forever, as will I. They are truly extraordinary.
May the magic of the moon and stars shine down on you and your loved ones.
xoxo, Gabby
